NIEE are education, communication, program and project development, and
practice applications in the area of engineering ethics. A primary role of
the Institute is to encourage cooperation among individuals, universities,

Ética na agricultura e produção de alimentos
Ethics is by its nature crosscutting and
multidimensional, and FAO has therefore designated "Ethics in Food and
Agriculture" as a Priority Area for Interdisciplinary Action, and
established an internal Committee on Ethics in Food and Agriculture to guide
the Organization's actions in this regard. |

EurSafe is a new, independent organisation, which
provides a focal point for those who have a professional interest in the
ethical issues involved in agriculture and food supply. The Society, founded

CABME – Centre for Agricultural Bio-
and Environmental Ethics |
CABME wants to analyse in a scientific, ethical and
philosophical way the evolution of biotechnology, food production techniques
and ecological sustainability. This way, CABME will make a valuable
contribution the the public debate on these issues. |
The Food Ethics Council develops the knowledge and
tools to make ethical thinking standard practice in food and agriculture, in policy,
business and everyday life. We work towards a food system that meets public
needs and respects public values – a food system that is secure, sustainable,
just and humane |
|
Applied bioethics is concerned with the appropriate
application of biological knowledge and practice, pre-eminently
biotechnology, to food production, industry and medical uses of farm animals
(e.g. in providing organ transplants for human patients). It is closely
related to, but distinct from, biomedical ethics (or bioethics, unqualified),
which is concerned with issues related specifically to human health and
welfare, and to environmental ethics, which deals with the impact of human
activity on the biosphere. |

Ethics and animal farming |
The Ethical Matrix is an educational resource for
students and teachers in schools and colleges. The resource provides 3 class
exercises in how to apply ethics to issues in animal farming, including an
interactive web-based exercise. The exercise enables students to make ethical
assessments, based on factual information, about the impacts of organic
versus intensive farming methods on farmers, consumers, farm animals, and the
environment. |

Revistas (publicações periódicas)
A multi-disciplinary quarterly journal, launched in
1995, exploring ethical issues confronting scientists and engineers |
|
Issues in Science & Technology is a forum for discussion
of public policy related to science, engineering, and medicine. This includes
policy for science (how we nurture the health of the research enterprise) and
science for policy (how we use knowledge more effectively to achieve social
goals), with emphasis on the latter. |

“This booklet makes the point that scientific knowledge
is defined collectively through discussion and debate. Collective
deliberation is also the best procedure to apply in using this booklet. Group
discussion—whether in seminars, orientations, research settings, or informal
settings—can demonstrate how different individuals would react in specific
situations, often leading to conclusions that no one would have arrived at
individually” (do prefácio) |
|
The 32-page introductory booklet (published summer
2001) is an initial look at issues such as genetics, climate change, arms,
militarisation of space, animal experiments, cleaner technology, information
technology, and science funding. In addition, it describes the experiences of
working scientists and how they have dealt with many of these issues.
Contributors include Nobel Peace Prize winner Professor Sir Joseph Rotblat,
inventor of the World-Wide-Web Dr Tim Berners-Lee and the well-known commentator
on biotechnology issues Dr Mae Wan Ho |
